DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introduction to foresight and how this can be used to think about the future and explore future options. It intends to introduce students to a number of methods that are used to explore the future and illustrate in a step-by-step approach the main components of a foresight exercise.

By drawing from different examples, the study-unit will demonstrate the practical applications of foresight in assisting decision-makers and managers to plan for the future.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To create an awareness about the need to plan for the future in business, public policy and society more generally;
- To provide an overview of popular tools for exploring future options.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the basic concepts of foresight;
- Demonstrate practical insights on how to run a foresight exercise;
- Identify the main characteristics of the tools typically used in a foresight exercise.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate the use and application of different foresight tools by providing an analysis of the context in which these tools can be used and the expected outcome;
- Select appropriate tools in a foresight activity and discuss the advantages and limitations of each tool.
